About us

Built from experience on the factory floor.

Quantify Environmental is a Guelph, Ontario-based industrial IoT integrator. We design and install permanent sensor networks that bring live utility, equipment and process data into one dashboard.

2021Founded in Guelph, Ontario by Dave Fox and Tom Ulanowski

Our story

Too many factories were making important decisions without timely data.

Between our team, we bring three decades of factory-floor experience across breweries, dairies, food processors, chemical manufacturers, and greenhouses. We learned the work alongside sanitation crews at 3 a.m., millwrights in compressor rooms and operators recording readings by hand above a pasteurizer.

The same gap appeared again and again. Skilled operators were managing millions of dollars of equipment using experience, monthly bills and whatever someone noticed during a round. The people were capable; the information arrived too late.

We began with audits and reports, but a snapshot could not show what changed the following week. In 2021, we built the company we had wanted to hire: one that installs permanent sensors, keeps the system working and reviews the findings every month with the people who run the process.

That is why Quantify exists — and why the founders still spend their time on factory floors. We believe the people designing the system should understand the site firsthand and remain accountable for the result.

    Dave Fox, MSc

    Co-founder

Dave spends most weeks on factory floors and still enjoys finding the leak, schedule or process change that no one could see before. He studied biogeography and earth sciences at the University of Waterloo and holds an MSc in Arctic geomorphology from McGill, then spent his first working years as an environmental scientist cleaning up contaminated sites. Consulting came next, as a project manager and technical sales lead, with assessment work in more than thirty food and beverage facilities across North America. Fifteen years of that adds up to a fairly good instinct for where a factory is losing water and energy. He was named a Clean50 Emerging Leader in 2019 and teaches sustainable resource management part time at Humber College.

  • Tom Ulanowski

    founder-tom [TOM-REVIEW]

    Tom Ulanowski, MSc, P.Ag, P.Chem

    Co-founder

Tom leads the team. He designs the monitoring architecture, works through the instrumentation and builds the calculations behind the dashboard. He holds an HBSc in analytical chemistry and environmental monitoring from the University of Toronto and an MSc in biogeochemistry and hydrogeology from Western, where he ran an environmental research laboratory at the Biotron and did field research in northern Canada. He has more than fifteen years in manufacturing, environmental monitoring, consulting and quality assurance, including leading quality and regulatory affairs for regulated manufacturing and controlled environment agriculture. He is a Professional Chemist, a Chartered Chemist and a Professional Agrologist, a published scientist and a named inventor on multiple patents. The British Columbia Institute of Agrologists named him Agrologist of the Month in May 2021.

How we work

Permanent monitoring, not another audit or flyby.

Audits and reports can identify opportunities, but they capture only a moment. We give teams continuous data they can see for themselves and use to make, verify and defend their own decisions.

  • We install it ourselves

We design, source, configure and install the sensor network. A typical installation takes less than a week, and usually does not interrupt production. When licensed trades are needed, we coordinate them and remain accountable for the work.

  • We stay on the monthly review

The dashboard finds it; the review makes sure it gets fixed. That second half is where the savings actually land, and it is the half most vendors skip. Some of our clients are working toward ISO 50001 or an ISO 14064 greenhouse gas inventory, and the Energy Management Information System (EMIS) supplies the measured data both standards run on. Others already hold ISO 14001 environmental management and need the numbers underneath it.

  • We build on what you have

Existing meters, PLCs with 4-20 mA outputs, legacy SCADA and the spreadsheets your team already keeps: we bring all of them in. We do not rip things out.

Why we do it

A factory that understands itself can compete.

Canadian manufacturers face rising input costs, energy volatility and global competitors with mature operating data. Better measurement helps facilities reduce waste, protect margins and make the case for continued investment in Canadian production.

Data creates visibility.

Visibility creates action.

Action creates savings.
